Burnham Beeches - fine art oil on canvas by Shirley Rothwell (variant AND9499105)
The historic Burnham Beeches have been described as one of the finest woodland tracts anywhere in Britain - the remnants of a vast forest that once covered almost the entire county of Buckinghamshire.
Burnham Beeches is owned and managed by the Corporation of London who bought the woods to save them from developers in 1880. The woods have been used ever since for the edification of disadvantaged Londoners.
Burnham Beeches are within the area around London protected by Green Belt legislation. The village of Burnham is mentioned in the Domesday Book, although there has more than likely been a settlement on the site since well before the Romans came.
Burnham Beeches is in fact a favorite location shoot, having body-doubled for Sherwood Forest in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, an Irish woodland in The Crying Game, and ancient English woods in First Knight and Ivanhoe.
The area around Burnham was awash with highwaymen in the Middle Ages and it was said that the Vicar of nearby Hurley got danger money for riding through the region.
